Microsoft is investigating reports that the August 11 Windows 11 security update: KB5121003 is causing certain games to freeze, close unexpectedly, display EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION, or even restart the PC.

The good news: the issue appears more limited than some headlines suggest.

Microsoft’s investigation currently points to a conflict involving low-level drivers installed by certain RGB lighting components and peripherals. Drivers with names similar to inpoutx64 may trigger the problem when launching affected games.

Games specifically mentioned so far include:

  • ARC Raiders
  • THE FINALS
  • MARVEL Tลkon: Fighting Souls

The issue affects Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. Windows Server is not currently listed as affected.

My recommendation for gamers:

✅ If your computer is working normally, leave the update installed. It contains important security fixes.

✅ Update your GPU drivers, RGB-control software, motherboard utilities, peripheral software, and games.

✅ Avoid optional Windows preview updates until Microsoft completes its investigation.

✅ If crashes begin, check Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer before uninstalling anything.

Press Windows + R, enter perfmon /rel, and review the timeline for application or hardware failures.

For IT teams, this is another reminder of why staged update rings matter. Security updates should first be validated against specialized workstations, vendor utilities, engineering applications, gaming systems, and hardware-control software before broad deployment.

The takeaway: remain aware, but don’t panic or uninstall the update solely because of a headline. At this point, the confirmed issue appears tied to particular games and RGB-related system components, not every Windows 11 gaming PC.

Microsoft is still investigating, so the scope and recommended mitigation may change.

 People ask me a lot - do you miss Russia? Yes. I do. I wish I could travel and visit my family over there. To see my beautiful city I was born in, Smolensk. I wish I could book a flight right now. But there are some limitations. I am technically viewed as a Russian citizen still. The country is currently at war. My Russian passport is long expired. My ties with US government make it a little tricky. I would love to set foot in Russia knowing I would not be locked up and out in prison for simply being American. If I can have someone guarantee 100% safety, please let me know.
